Secure your wireless network with Air Defense

The Defense Information System Agency (DISA) has approved the AirDefense Services Platform by Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI) which will protect the U.S. Department of Defense wireless networks from attacks, intruders and hostile devices.

DISA added Motorola’s AirDefense Services Platform v9.0 to the Unified Capabilities-Approved Products List (UC-APL), which certifies equipment to be compliant with the Defense Department’s security and interoperability standards. AirDefense offers a wireless intrusion detection solution (WIDS) that recognizes and blocks unauthorized users and devices from connecting to a wireless network, without regard to it’s manufacturer.

Enterprise capabilities that are included on the UC-APL have been approved to be acquired by Department of Defense agencies, which are required to lau nch security systems that will protect wireless networks at their facilities. AirDefense is the first and only approved product in the WIDS category on the UC-APL to date.

There is a major user base of AirDefense systems protecting wireless networks for the military already in place. With the placement of AirDefense on the UC-APL, customers of the Defense Department can now be assured their networks comply with DISA requirements.

Benefits of AirDefense

  • The AirDefense Services Platform includes advanced and constant wireless monitoring tools to identify network attacks and vulnerabilities, which will instantly terminate the connection of any rogue devices.
  • With an elaborate library of more than 200 security and performance events, AirDefense will automatically identify and report wireless attacks, suspect traffic patterns or other unusual activity. False alarms are minimized with its detection engines.
  • In addition to the UC-APL requirements, AirDefense v9.0 meets FIPS 140-2 U.S. government security certification standards and is in the process of becoming Common Criteria certified.
  • AirDefense has been broadly deployed throughout the Department of Defense, including the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, unified combatant commands, defense agencies, intelligence organizations and civilian federal government agencies to help protect network data, detect unauthorized devices, alleviate threats and monitor wireless activity.

Paul Mueller, vice president, U.S. Federal Government Markets Division, Motorola Solutions stated. “Until recently, the Department of Defense deployed wireless intrusion detection solutions simply to enforce policies that prohibited devices from being used at their facilities. But with the introduction of smartphones and tablets as approved equipment, Defense Department agencies now can use AirDefense’s security features to permit only authorized users with access to their wireless enterprise networks, and to manage and control their devices over-the-air.”

Wendy McCaw, director of program management, Managed Services, Motorola Solutions had this to say: “AirDefense offers holistic wireless network management for security and compliance. Motorola’s approach provides a vendor-agnostic solution for advanced wireless security monitoring, multi-vendor WLAN infrastructure management and network assurance with remote troubleshooting. Being added to the UC-APL ensures AirDefense meets DISA’s compliance requirements, and that it works on any federal network.”
